A look at England's motoring history

About a half-century ago, British motorcycles were seen all across the globe while a large number of world-champion riders came from that country. In the 1950s and 1960s, such brands as BSA, Triumph Bonneville and Norton were highly recognized and popular on the road. Unfortunately, this tradition progressively and completely faded over the following decades.


Only an hour from London
The historic Beaulieu (pronounced "B-you-lee"), set in the heart of the New Forest National Park, is not only home to the world-famous National Motor Museum but also the Montagu family castle and Beaulieu Abbey, established in the 13th century.

Two-wheel history
Motorcycles continue to be a big part of our motoring landscape. Names like Triumph, BSA and Norton became success stories and performance benchmarks well before the Japanese. The Museum has a special section dedicated to these famous machines. Of course, it's not an all-English show; visitors can also admire Italian, American and Japanese models.

Such racers as Mike Hailwood and John Surtees excelled on international speedways back in the day. Hailwood's Ducati as well as Phil Read's Augusta are among the stars of this exhibit.

Scooters are also on display, alongside WWII-era motorcycles and side cars.

In addition to two-wheelers, the National Motor Museum specializes in British automobiles -- past and present.
