Some will remember the motorized bicycles, also known as mopeds. Half-bicycles, half-motorcycles, they were popular in the 1980s. In Canada, German manufacturer Sachs was selling such vehicles. Its products were known for their sturdiness and reliability. Unfortunately, the company went bankrupt and has stopped doing business in Canada for several years now.


However, the Alliance Moteur Groupe (AMG), based in Brossard, Quebec, decided to start selling imported scooters. Executives turned to Europe, where these two-wheelers are quite popular, and they picked -- you guessed it -- Sachs!

Right now, two Sachs-designed scooters are marketed in Canada under the AMG name: the Boréal and Nitro. The first is a traditional scooter powered by a 49-cc, four-stroke, single-cylinder engine.

More interesting is the newly introduced Nitro, which is sold as the MadAss in Germany. This scooter uses the same powerplant as the Boréal, not to mention a two-speed automatic transmission. However, the design really set it apart. The vehicle is built on a naked tubular frame which integrates the fuel tank. It looks like no other scooter on today's market.

The AMG Nitro also features two halogen headlights, an electric starter and a digital odometer. According to the company, this unique scooter is just as competent in the city as in the country, in large part because of its 16-inch wheels. As for the brakes, discs are mounted up front and in the back.

The Nitro can reach a top speed of 45 kph and accommodate two people with a combined weight of under 280 kilos.
