AMA SBK: Cardenas and Young split at Barber

6-20-2011

by moto123.com

Martin Cardenas (Suzuki) claimed Saturday the first win of his young AMA Pro Superbike career while Blake Young (Suzuki) scored his fifth of the 2010 season on Sunday at Barber Motorsports Park.

Cardenas showed off his talents in extremely tricky drying track conditions that came about after the skies opened up following six dry laps, bringing the contest to a momentary halt.

Once it was restarted under officially declared 'wet race' conditions, Cardenas stayed at the front and was never bothered by anyone except for an unsuccessful late charge by Ben Bostrom (Suzuki).

Bostrom tried his best, but just couldn't find a way through as the Colombian crossed the finish line with only 0.137 seconds over his pursuer.

Blake Young, who chose to sit out of Friday's wet practice, actually bolted into the lead early following the restart and held relatively strong throughout. He ultimately reeled in third-place points.

Defending class champion Josh Hayes (Yamaha) was another rider who tried to better his position on the last lap, but nearly paid the price for it following a bold manoeuvre that nearly made him fall.

Hayes regrouped and came home in fourth. Larry Pegram (BMW) was the last rider in the top 5.

On Sunday, it was Blake Young’s turn to shine as he made the most of the difficult drying-track conditions to finish ahead of his primary title rivals, teammate Tommy Hayden and Josh Hayes.

Young came up huge on a blisteringly hot day on Sunday. Meanwhile, Hayden suffered another nightmarish outing. The Kentuckian led from the start with Young, Hayes, Saturday winner Martin Cardenas, and National Guard Jordan Suzuki's Roger Hayden right in tow, but eliminated from contention as his bike went up in smoke and flames in the heat on lap 9 of 21.

As Hayden pulled off the course, Young inherited the lead and set about keeping a determined Hayes behind him, but Young never allowed him to pass.

With two laps remaining, the Suzuki ace opened a gap of a half second, effectively breaking his opponent's pursuit. It was Young's fifth win in nine races.

Cardenas impressed by shadowing the battle for the lead deep into the race before finally cruising home to a safe third, rounding out a spectacular weekend for the rookie Superbike pilot.

Hayes retains his points lead but only just, as he'll carry a 235-233 lead over Young into Mid-Ohio. Hayden is now well behind, holding third on 187 points.
