AMA SX: Dungey reclaims top position

3-2-2010

by Marc Cantin , moto123.com

The AMA Supercross series was back in Atlanta last weekend where Ryan Dungey (Suzuki) captured his third victory of the season in front of more than 69,182 fans present at the Georgia Dome.

This victory allowed Dungey to move alone at the top of the standings.

As the gates dropped on the main event, Dungey grabbed the Spike Holeshot Award, followed by Trey Canard (Honda) and Ryan Villopoto (Kawasaki).

Dungey quickly opened up an early gap over Canard who began a heated battle with Villopoto. Eventually, the Kawasaki rider moved his way into second and set his sights on his rival. Villopoto closed in slightly, but on lap 10 suffered a frightening get off, allowing Dungey to dominate the rest of the way.

Canard captured his career-best premier class finish with a runner-up result in just his second race while his team-mate Davi Millsaps (Honda) gave Honda Red Bull Racing a 2-3 result. Villopoto came home in 19th.

Dungey currently holds a 20-point lead over San Manuel Yamaha’s Josh Hill in the AMA Supercross standings while Villopoto falls to third, 23 points out of first.

Next round to be presented March 6th in Daytona, Florida.
