2015 SYM HD200 Preview

8-5-2015

SanYang Motors (SYM) products hail from Taiwan and are distributed by Motorsports Canada Ltd. through more than a dozen retailers across the country. Returning unchanged for 2015, the SYM HD200 is a lesser-known alternative for people who want a proper scooter for both urban and highway use.

It all starts with a 171cc, 4-stroke, single-cylinder engine that produces 15.3 hp at 8,000 rpm and 11.3 lb-ft of torque at 6,500 rpm. The 2015 SYM HD200 benefits from liquid cooling and industry-exclusive ceramic coating for the cylinder. Look for a fuel economy in the 70 mpg range (about 3.36L/100km) and a top speed of 116 km/h -- fast enough to cruise safely on the highway.

How about the chassis? Suspension consists of a telescopic fork up front and a simple swingarm in the rear. A 220mm front disc and a rear drum handle braking duties. The HD200 also rides on big, 16” wheels, pushing seat height to 790mm.

Speaking of which, the rider’s portion of the seat is sculpted in a way that keeps the body upright and increases leg comfort during long stints on the road. Naturally, the passenger has a grab rail to hold. Front and underseat storage compartments (the latter swallows up a full-face helmet) provide convenience for cargo, as does the rear rack.

Available in red, black, yellow or grey, the 2015 SYM HD200 carries a base MSRP of $4,199. It’s cheaper than most suburban scooters in this segment, especially 250cc and 300cc models, yet fun and reliable, nonetheless.
