2015 Yamaha YZF-R3 Preview

Smaller displacements are growing in popularity across the country, and there's more and more models to choose from. That's understandable given the ridiculously high cost of registering and insuring a 400cc or larger bike.

After missing out on the Yamaha YZF-R125 and MT-125, fans of entry-level sport bikes in Canada can rejoice as the new YZF-R3 makes its debut here. Similar to KTM with the RC390, Yamaha is entering a battle that's been going on since 2008 when the Kawasaki Ninja 250 opposed the Honda CBR125R and CBR250 (now both in the 300cc range).

A true YZF
The new 2015 Yamaha YZF-R3 commands respect with superbike-inspired looks, a unique semi-trellis frame, and a 321cc parallel-twin engine. Just like the bigger, more powerful R6 and R1, it packs quite a visual punch thanks to a full fairing in Yamaha Blue and White, Metallic Black or Vivid Red. Let's not forget the prominent headlights and the short tailpipe that's reminiscent of MotoGP Movistar-Yamaha YZF-M1 race bikes.

Less radical than the R6, the new R3 offers a more upright and more comfortable riding position since the handlebars are mounted above the top triple clamp. Average weight (169kg all tanks full), a smartly developed frame and calibrated suspension, and a competent braking system help reinforce the notion that Yamaha takes its sport bikes very seriously.

An all-new engine
Some of the industry's latest technologies can be found on the 2015 Yamaha YZF-R3 including double overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder, a downdraft-style combustion chamber, and ultra-lightweight pistons in forged aluminum with 20% silicon for better heat dissipation and reduced wear.

Mated to a 6-speed transmission and fed by a 14-litre fuel tank is an exciting, yet efficient, 42-hp engine. That's more power than the CBR300R and Ninja 300, but slightly less than the RC390 (44 hp).

No stones unturned
In keeping with the general style of the 2015 Yamaha YZF-R3, the instrument panel features an analog tachometer and wide LCD screen filled with useful information. There's even an adjustable shift light to put you in a racing mood.

Compact and loaded with modern engineering solutions, the new YZF-R3 will likely enjoy tremendous success in Canada as it fills a void below the R6 and meets the needs of sport-bike enthusiasts on a budget.
