Honda broke new ground in 2014 with the Pioneer 700 and 700-4. Now, for 2015, the Japanese manufacturer is at it again, adding the entry-level, two-passenger Pioneer 500. Boasting a compact design, 5-speed transmission, and convenient paddle shifting (that's right, just like a sporty car!), this new side-by-side is only 50” wide so you can head down tighter trails that lead to more fun!

Built on a smaller version of the Pioneer 700 frame, the new Pioneer 500 is light, nimble, manoeuvrable, and can even be transported in the back of a full-size pickup truck. It offers the ease-of-use and safety features riders have come to expect from side-by-sides including 3-point emergency locking retractor seat belts, a steering wheel, and a sturdy rollover protection structure meeting OSHA standards.

The Pioneer 500 even takes convenience a step further with an ingenious door/net/latch design which keeps safety netting attached and out of the way for one-step entry or exit. However, instead of a rear dump box like the ones found on larger, more capable side-by-sides, it comes with an ATV-style cargo rack.

Powering the new Pioneer 500 is Honda’s proven 475cc, high-torque, single-cylinder engine that offers the efficiency of longitudinal mounting and liquid cooling along with an electric-shift, 5-speed gearbox with reverse that's operated via paddle shifters on the steering wheel.

By using an overhead-valve layout and a semi-dry-sump lubrication system, engine height is significantly reduced, thus lowering the centre of gravity and improving ground clearance (9.6” or 243mm).

The Pioneer 500 rides on a fully independent suspension with adjustable preload in the rear. Payload and towing capacities are rated at 450 lbs (203 kg) and 1,000 lbs (450 kg), respectively.

Starting at $10,499, the 2015 Honda Pioneer 500 is available in red, green, yellow, or camouflage. Honda offers Work and Trail packages at a little more than $1,100 apiece to suit more specific needs. You can also opt for soft or hard door, roof and tailgate panels, skid plates, a polycarbonate windshield, a Warn winch or plow kit, and many other convenient accessories.
