2014 Sea-Doo Spark Preview

by Guillaume Rivard ,

BRP is pioneering a whole new market segment -- light recreation -- with the introduction of the 2014 Sea-Doo Spark, a personal watercraft that's said to be perfect for family fun thanks to playful and easy-to-ride dynamics, the most fuel-efficient engine around, and a light enough package (185kg) for many compact sedans to tow. Dad, mom, and the kids will also like the many vibrant colours, graphics, and customization options available.

Oh, and one more thing: At $5,599, the all-new 2014 Sea-Doo Spark becomes the industry's most affordable watercraft by a wide margin.

Discover the 2014 Sea-Doo Spark
The 2014 Sea-Doo Spark’s Rotax 900 ACE (Advanced Combustion Efficiency) engine uses just 7.34 litres of fuel per hour, while the higher output, quicker accelerating Rotax 900 HO ACE uses just 9.08 litres per hour. In fact, the manufacturer promises up to 35% better fuel economy than the closest competitor, which is probably the Yamaha VX Sport.

Staying with the green theme, the composite material (Polytec) of the hull and deck is recyclable, making the 2014 Sea-Doo Spark a more environmentally friendly watercraft.

The 899cc, four-stroke, three-cylinder engine starts and stops with a single, user-friendly control button on the handlebar, while Intelligent Throttle Control (iTC) is a fly-by-wire system that works electronically to transfer the input from the throttle lever to the engine. It also allows for different riding modes such as the Sport mode that’s available with the Rotax 900 HO ACE engine.

Like other Sea-Doo watercraft, the 2014 Spark features the D-Sea-Bel system to ensure a quiet ride on the water, plus Off-Throttle Assisted Steering (OTAS) to reduce steering effort in off-throttle situations for greater manoeuvrability. Speaking of which, by opting for the exclusive Intelligent Brake and Reverse (iBR) system, you can stop up to 100 feet sooner than with other watercraft to make docking easier.

Other 2014 Sea-Doo Spark highlights

Built on the minimalist Exoskel architecture that keeps only the essential structural parts in the front section, the 2014 Sea-Doo Spark is available in 2up and 3up configurations with a total weight capacity of 160kg or 205kg, respectively; yet it's small enough so you can easily store one (or two) in your garage.

The multifunction digital information centre features as many as 16 key indicators including Sport/Touring mode, fuel level, tachometer, speedometer, fuel consumption meter, and hour meter.

Finally, a Convenience Package adds a handy 28-litre front storage bin kit and a Sea-Doo step that makes climbing back on board easier after a refreshing dip.
