2014 Arctic Cat Wildcat 4X Preview

11-18-2013

by Richard Roch , Auto123.com

Those glorified ATVs we call side-by-side vehicles have been around for a while, but now manufacturers are taking it a step further with four-passenger models that are basically the dune-buggy version of off-road SUVs.

Favourable power-to-weight ratio
The all-new 2014 Arctic Cat Wildcat 4X is one such example. Its 951-cc, four-stroke, V-twin engine with EFI -- carried over from last year's Wildcat 4 -- teams up with a CVT that includes a rapid-response clutch, Hi/Lo range, reverse, and park.

This clean, efficient combo generates in excess of 90 hp, easily thrusting the 707-kg 2014 Arctic Cat Wildcat 4X with authority. With the flip of a switch, power is delivered to both the rear and front wheels through the open front differential. You can double-check the operating mode you're in at all times via an analog/digital instrument panel that features 13 other critical indicators.

The X factor

Compared with the Wildcat 4, the 2014 Arctic Cat Wildcat 4X sports body-coloured aluminum bumpers, colour-matched seats, custom graphics, and large 27” Maxxis Bighorn tires that ensure superior grip.

The new model is also longer (+8” approx.) and heavier (+11 kg), while width and height remain unchanged.

Comfort meets capability
The sporty 2014 Arctic Cat Wildcat 4X rides on a five-link rear suspension that offers class-leading 18” of travel. Engineers added FOX Podium shocks with 23-position compression adjustment to give users even more control and comfort on all kinds of terrain.

Further enhancing the riding experience is EPS for minimal steering effort even at low speeds. As for the four high-back bucket seats, they come with three-point seat belts to make sure everyone stays safe and sound. Passengers also have a grab bar they can hang on to when tackling rocky trails.
