The little GS gets a makeover and now sports much racier, more masculine looks inspired by the larger R1200GS. The better equipped 2013 BMW F700GS -- direct successor to the F650GS -- no longer carries the stigma of an entry-level machine.

Gone are the plain fairings and, more importantly, the minimalist brakes. This time, riders will benefit from massive 300-mm front discs with dual-piston callipers, as well as defeatable, dual-channel ABS.


Loaded with electronics
The 2013 BMW F700GS is available with three-mode Electronic Suspension Adjustment (ESA) in the back. The spring preload can still be adjusted through a screw whose revised ergonomics allow you to make adjustments from the rider's seat.

Another major upgrade is the available Active Stability Control (ASC) system. As with BMW's more upscale models, ASC monitors wheel rotation speed through ABS sensors, and makes appropriate corrections by altering ignition and injection to restore full rear-wheel grip. For extra peace of mind, F700GS buyers can add a tire pressure monitoring system.

Improved powerplant and instrumentation
Naturally, the 2013 BMW F700GS receives several engine improvements. The 798cc parallel twin-cylinder goes from 71 to 75 hp at 7,300 rpm. There's also 1.4 lb-ft of additional torque. Expect more suitable performance and thrills from the F700GS, which is now just 10 hp shy of the F800GS.

Meanwhile, the new instrument panel features BMW's signature styling, with the tachometer juxtaposed with the larger speedometer. The addition of a fuel and engine temperature gauge means you don't have to turn to the optional trip computer. The controls on the handlebars were redesigned for more user-friendliness, as well.

Bottom line
With more power and equipment, sexier styling, and unprecedented safety, not to mention championship-winning DNA, the new 2013 BMW F700GS will prove to be a worthy representative of the GS family in the middleweight adventure segment.
