1-14-2013

by Pascal Bastien , moto123.com

It may not look like it at first glance, but the 2013 Yamaha FJR1300 has been significantly upgraded. Engineers went over the big sport touring star with a fine-tooth comb and left no aspect untouched to help it stay ahead of the pack.

Facing increasingly stiff competition from the BMW K1600 GT, Kawasaki GTR 1400 and the new Triumph Trophy 1200SE, the FJR had no choice but to start making further headway in a hurry.

Sharper weapons
The 2013 Yamaha FJR1300's fairing, headlights, windscreen and side deflectors have all been redesigned to improve aerodynamics and protection for both the rider and passenger. Meanwhile, the new LED position lamps and integrated turn signals enhance the modern look of this big flagship.

When it came to the engine, the folks at Yamaha set out to maximize the power-to-weight ratio, boost low- and mid-range torque, and reduce fuel consumption. That's why the 2013 Yamaha FJR1300 gets the Yamaha Chip Control Throttle (YCC-T), which can be found on the brand's R6 and R1 sport bikes, as well as new injectors and ceramic coating for the cylinders.

The on-board computer now controls the throttle valve opening and air/fuel intake based on engine speed and throttle twist grip position. Additionally, the revised exhaust system uses dual catalytic converters instead of four, which saves considerable weight.

Buyers of the 2013 Yamaha FJR1300 can select a manual or semi-automatic transmission. The latter is electronically controlled and offers a traditional foot shifter in addition to a hand shifter on the left handlebar. There's even a fully automatic mode that can downshift all the way to first gear to make the rider's life easier.

Electronics galore
The 2013 Yamaha FJR1300 enters the electronic aid era with an R1-derived traction control system, as well as variable engine maps with ''T mode'' for relaxed touring and ''S mode'' for sporty riding. Cruise control is now part of the mix, too. Furthermore, the bike features a more modern, more comprehensive instrument panel.

Superior comfort
The front fork and rear shock on the 2013 Yamaha FJR1300 benefit from new settings, and the adjustable seat gets extra padding for superior comfort. Please note that only the AS model with semi-automatic transmission offers the power adjustable suspension.

Often criticized on the previous generation, the windscreen's shape was changed for improved protection and the power adjustment speed was increased. Elsewhere, the centre stand now requires less effort and time to manipulate, while the new passenger footrests reduce vibration.

Bottom line
All in all, the 2013 Yamaha FJR1300 is better equipped and more rider-friendly than its predecessor, thanks in part to various electronic aids. Consider it a strong contender for Best GT Bike of 2013.
