2013 Ducati Hyperstrada Preview

3-5-2013

by Pascal Bastien , moto123.com

Ducati has a new, better-equipped version of the Hypermotard that's more suited for long-distance riding. The 2013 Ducati Hyperstrada offers extra seat padding, a windshield, a centre stand, passenger grab handles, and semi-rigid side bags.

In an increasingly popular market segment, the Italian manufacturer continues to mix standard (naked) bikes with dirt-oriented machines. The versatile 2013 Ducati Hyperstrada emulates the larger Multistrada with a sharp nose sitting high above the front wheel.

Plenty of power for a middleweight

Gone are the air-cooled Hypermotard 796 and 1100 models; the 2013 Ducati Hyperstrada inherits the liquid-cooled powerplant of the Streetfighter 848, much like the regular Hypermotard it's based on. This 821cc, 11-degree Testastretta engine generates 110 hp at 9,250 rpm and 66 lb-ft of torque at 7,750 rpm -- almost on par with the Kawasaki Versys 1000, which has an additional 222 cc.

The 2013 Ducati Hyperstrada offers three riding modes, as well as the Ducati Safety Pack (DSP), which includes a Brembo braking system, Bosch ABS, and 8-level Ducati Traction Control (DTC). It also comes with two 12V power outlets for easily plugging in heated grips, a GPS, an intercom, or a mobile battery charger, among other accessories.

Same frame, enhanced comfort
The 2013 Ducati Hyperstrada shares its next-generation tubular steel trellis frame with the Hypermotard SP, which offers superior longitudinal rigidity and lateral flexibility. The upswept tail, sculpted radiator cowls, and aggressive nose give it a sporty character that's so important to the Italian brand.

At the same time, the wider seat and 20-mm raised handlebar should provide enhanced comfort, while the white/grey colour scheme contributes to more classic looks.

Bottom line: The competitively priced 2013 Ducati Hyperstrada ($13,999) offers plenty of value in the segment, and wonderfully rounds out Ducati's dual-purpose lineup.
