Arctic Cat 500 Core EFI 2013

2013 Arctic Cat 500 Core EFI Preview

2-19-2013

by Guillaume Rivard , moto123.com

Arctic Cat makes it rather confusing for ATV fans with many subtle name changes and additions from one model year to the next. One such example in the recreation lineup is the 2013 Arctic Cat 500 Core EFI, which features a familiar powertrain and chassis.

A quick look across the spec sheet also reveals that this midsize ATV is pretty much on par with competitors like the Kymco MXU 450i, Honda TRX420, Polaris Sportsman 500 H.O., and Yamaha Kodiak 450.

Bread and butter

As you probably know, most Arctic Cat engines come from Taiwanese manufacturer Kymco. Here, we have a 443cc, four-stroke, SOHC unit that is cooled by both liquid and a fan. This fuel-injected single-cylinder operates through an automatic CVT with engine brake, Hi/Lo range and reverse. A simple switch on the right handlebar allows you to go from 2WD to 4WD on the fly.

The 2013 Arctic Cat 500 Core EFI offers 11'' of ground clearance and 10'' of travel at both ends thanks to its fully independent Ride-In suspension, which aims to increase confidence and comfort during trail riding. At the same time, this setup lowers the ride height and centre of gravity for superior handling. It works with 12'' powder-coated steel wheels wrapped by Duro Red Eagle tires that are designed to ride both on and off the trail.

Play and work
Owners who need to tackle big chores will be pleased with the 2013 Arctic Cat 500 Core EFI's front and rear steel racks (total payload of 135 kg), a sturdy 2'' rear hitch receiver to hook up a boat trailer or utility trailer, and more than 475 kg of towing capacity.

Meanwhile, the digital instrumentation displays vital information indicators including a speedometer, tachometer, clock, hour meter, fuel level, odometer/trip meter, gear position, battery condition, temperature, and oil pressure.

Base and beyond

Available in green or red, the 2013 Arctic Cat 500 Core EFI starts at $7,299. For a bit more refinement, consider the XT variant with automotive-style paint or camouflage treatment. If you plan to ride with a passenger, check out its larger twin, the TRV 500 Core EFI ($8,499).
