2012 Yamaha TMAX Preview

1-3-2012

by Pascal Bastien , moto123.com

Extensively revised engine
On the power front, the 2012 TMAX calls on the services of a forward-inclined, liquid-cooled twin-cylinder with DOHC and 4 valves per cylinder. Displacement has been bumped up from 500 to 530 cc and it now uses the same injector as the athletic R6. The camshafts’ profile has been revised, and the intake valves are now 26 mm instead of 25.

Power is dispatched to the rear wheel via an improved CVT transmission featuring a larger clutch, redesigned gears and all-new primary and secondary pulleys. Yamaha says it reduces power loss, ensures livelier throttle response and prolongs service life. The other notable evolution comes in the shape of an all-new belt drive, which replaces the two oil-bathed chains of the old model.

The 2012 TMAX is a highly improved machine, and it’ll definitely withstand the assault of its new German rivals. But will the more potent BMWs prove more attractive to riding enthusiasts? One thing is certain, the TMAX will continue to seduce buyers looking for more than just a means to get from A to B.
