2012 Hyosung TE450S Preview

7-2-2012

by Guillaume Rivard , moto123.com

A division of S&T Motors, the largest motorcycle manufacturer in Korea, Hyosung remains relatively obscure in Canada. More famous for its motorcycles and scooters, the brand offers a single ATV model called TE450S – but it may very well surprise you.

Equipment on par with the competition
The 2012 Hyosung TE450S boasts many of the features found on every other high-performance sport ATV including a high-tensile frame, a modern four-stroke engine, a fully adjustable suspension (with double A-arms up front and a single shock in the back), a sizable aluminum swingarm, and disc brakes at both ends. Let's not forget the striking bodywork, available in either black or red.

Hyosung's old OEM partner, Suzuki, provided the basis for the chassis, which rides on 10'' front and 9'' rear alloy wheels (2WD only) and features a detachable sub-frame for easy maintenance. Behind each footpeg is a nerf bar and safety net combination that provides more secure footing during aggressive riding. And should you need to haul cargo, there's a utility rack in the back.

Flanked by two pods of indicator lights, the easy-to-read centre digital display includes a speedometer and odometer.

Muscle to get the job done
The 2012 Hyosung TE450S is powered by a liquid-cooled 449cc DOHC single-cylinder engine with a compression ratio of 12.0:1. Fed by a Mikuni carburetor, it generates 52 horsepower at 8,500 rpm and 35.13 pounds-feet of torque at 7,000 rpm. The company talks about a ''powerful yet smooth'' unit that combines with a five-speed manual transmission with reverse and chain final drive for the kind of power delivery riders look for.

Unfortunately, at 211.8 kilograms, the TE450S is one of the heaviest sport ATVs in its class along with the Kymco Maxxer 450i. Plus, it doesn't quite possess the same level of sophistication as the big guns including the Yamaha YFZ450, KTM 450 SX and Kawasaki KFX450R. However, it promises a comfortable ride and interesting value for would-be racers.

Check your nearest Hyosung retailer for pricing and complete specifications.
