2010 BMW R1200GS Review of the new King of the Dirt?

8-6-2010

by Marc Cantin , moto123.com

Jumping from a ledge to a watermelon, flying over a hump, the bike remains as stable as a locomotive, firmly planted on two wheels that are going like crazy over a particularly rutted section. At the end of section 2, the long, curving, sandy, uphill climb that brings us back to the holiday camp offers me one last chance at a nice long drift. I sit back down before coming to a stop on my tiptoes, as sweaty and out of breath as at the end of an endurocross trial. Holy cow! I want to go again, but a niggling little voice tells me I’d better not.

As good as the 2010 GS is in the dirt, the improved engine and suspension keep it at the forefront of efficiency on pavement, combining agility and smoothness to deliver a bike that very few others can keep up with anywhere. (Photo: BMW)

I now have my own answers to key questions. Is the ESA suspension efficient? You could say that! And what about that engine? Personally, I think it’s the best adventure bike engine ever put forth by BMW’s. Traction control? Excellent on the road, it allows you to assess how slippery the painted lines are. On the Trans-Labrador highway, I’d use it to decrease fuel consumption and tire wear. The ABS? Better than being able to lock the rear wheel.

Could the 2010 R1200GS be the best adventure bike ever? Quite possibly.

And thank you to the importers who lent me the waterproof gloves and the great waterproof Bering kit, Owen gloves, Maniwata jacket and Eco pants.
