2010 Yamaha YFZ 450X Preview

12-7-2009

by Pascal Bastien , moto123.com

Just as it has done in the past, 2010 Yamaha is offering the most comprehensive 2010 sport ATV lineup on the market, with the Raptor 90, 250, 350 and 700, the Wolverine 450, as well as the YFZ 450 and 450R thoroughbreds. On top of a new palette of colours for nearly all its sport models, Yamaha is introducing the new YFZ450X for the most demanding high performance riders.

The YFZ450X targets ATV endurance racers, just the thing for racers and other maniacs who love to ride a light and quick machine over rock-, sand-, stump- and log-strewn trails.

The YFZ450X targets ATV endurance racers, who run on the most demanding of courses, over rock-, sand-, stump- and log-strewn trails.

The 450X is easier to manoeuver than the old 450R, thanks largely to its reduced width: at 1,170 mm, it’s 70 mm narrower than the old model. What’s more, the latest offering is 2.4 kilos lighter than its predecessor.

More flexible suspension
The new X also inherits its older brother’s chassis, a judicious combination of steel tubes and cast aluminum parts that are easy to take apart and repair.

The YZF450R uses a new, smaller diameter spring/shock setup that reduces both the overall and unsprung weight, with adjustable pre-load, and compression and rebound damping. Yamaha claims that the more compliant suspensions make the machines less tiring to ride, as well as more agile thanks to reduced front overhang and shorter wheelbase. The new ATV also benefits from increased ground clearance and longer A-arms that better absorb large bumps.

More efficient in tight spots
The new X inherits the engine from the older 450R, one of the most powerful engines under 500cc motivator in the industry. It had already been revised for the 2009 R with a reinforced crankshaft journal, stronger connecting rod, and more efficient balancing shaft. This year, the 2010 X benefits from improved fuel injection and ignition mapping to improve low- and mid-range torque. The wide ration gearbox features a short first gear for tight spots, and a long fifth gear to reduce rpm and increase maximum speed.
