2009 Polaris Sportsman XP 550 EFI Review (video)

10-17-2008

by Pascal Bastien , moto123.com

Despite its rather athletic-sounding moniker, the brand new Sportsman XP is a utility ATV that combines versatility and comfort. Powered by a new and enthusiastic one-cylinder longitudinal engine, this ATV offers up good performance as well as first-rate technical solutions. Designed specifically for ATVs, the engine produces 40 hp and accelerates markedly better than its predecessor. Mounted longitudinally, it makes for a much slimmer beast. The narrower seat and new CVT transmission, now found under the former, allowed the engineers to double the size of the footrest platforms. This architecture also lessens friction by reducing the number of moving parts, which translates into a decrease in power loss.

The XP 550's transmission ensures snappy starts and features exemplary operation.

Novel transmission
The new continuously variable transmission (CVT) features two speeds. A switch on the handlebars allows you to select one of three modes: 2-wheel drive, 4-wheel drive with considerably improved reactive system, or constant mesh 4-wheel drive, and that even downhill. Note that this 4-wheel-drive system is the only one in the industry to deliver constant torque to all four wheels no matter your speed. However, the gear selector located on the right side has been greatly criticized by testers, as it requires an above-average effort to use and is not ergonomically located. Too bad, because apart from this minor glitch, the Sportsman XP 550 EFI is a model of ergonomics.

The XP 550's transmission ensures snappy starts and features exemplary operation. The engineers calibrated this CVT transmission so that it reduces rpm and thus optimizes top speed. What's more, it's equipped with an engine braking system designed to work at low speeds, when you need it the most; at higher speeds, the system backs off gradually to ensure a constantly sporty ride. Brilliant! Performance-wise, the XP 550 accelerates with enthusiasm and easily hits the 100-km/h mark. The efficiency and versatility of this new transmission rank it among the best in the industry, and it's without a doubt the best one ever developed by the American manufacturer.
