2008 Dodge Caliber SRT4 Review

8-21-2008

by Luc Gagné , Auto123.com

Still, at the end of my 7-day road test, the engine of the Caliber SRT4 proved no more fuel-thirsty than that of other high-performance hatchbacks. I travelled over 1,000 kilometers and wound up with a combined city-highway average of 9.6 liters per 100 kilometers. That's about the same rating as the manual-equipped Subaru Impreza WRX which I test-drove earlier this year (10.1 L/100 km).

Larger disc brakes than on the R/T model help the Caliber SRT4 stop from 100 to 0 km/h over a distance of under 38 meters -- or so says the automaker.

Efficient performance
Such fuel economy for an explosive Dodge like this one is even more remarkable given the acceleration time of 6.5 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h (according to the company). Helping the SRT4 remain under control are larger disc brakes than on the R/T model. Coming to a full stop from a speed of 100 km/h requires a distance of under 38 meters. Not bad.

The fully-independent suspension features a larger stabiliser bar in the back. Body roll is inexistent... although I could say the same thing about comfort. For short stints in the city, the ride is fair, but on long trips, it becomes quite unpleasant. Of course, drivers who are familiar with the Jeep Wrangler will feel right at home in the SRT4...

Yet, despite its firmness, the suspension does not exactly prevent front-wheel skidding when you strongly depress the throttle. The significant torque steer only makes matters worse.

Large turning radius
The performance-tuned hydraulic power steering, however, is very precise, something few pony cars could brag about. The wide Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar tires of my tester naturally made it heavier at low speeds, but I quickly got used to it. I also got used to multiplying parking maneuvers due to the considerable turning radius -- 12 meters versus 10.8 for other Calibers.

Inside, front passengers benefit from excellent bucket seats with SRT logos. These tall, heavily-bolstered perches largely make up for the tractor-like ride offered by the rigid suspension. On the left of the steering wheel, where regular Calibers boast a small open storage compartment, the SRT4 features a big turbocharger boost gauge. It's a nice thing to have if you want to impress your friends, although it's not really useful. You ought to keep your eyes on the road instead of this small needle.

On the left of the steering wheel is the much talked-about turbocharger boost gauge.
