2002-2006 Honda CR-V Pre-Owned

6-21-2008

Usually, a used car review spends a couple of pages outlining the benefits, characteristics and features of a given model- followed by a look at an often-lengthy list of common problems and recalls that potential buyers should be aware of. The internet lets dissatisfied owners take to message boards and consumer advocate sites with sharp-tongued complaints in a heartbeat. This makes my job simple- usually.

2002 Honda CR-V

Sometimes though, a very reliable and trouble-free vehicle comes along that poses a challenge. Reviews on these models are hard to write, but they usually indicate an excellent vehicle to buy. The Honda CR-V is one such example.

It's a compact SUV launched in 1997, and it's been a smash-hit ever since. Owners like the relative fuel economy, flexibility and all-weather operation the CR-V offers by way of its 'real time' four wheel drive system.

Rather than operating via a lever or switch when extra traction is needed, the CR-V's 4x4 system automatically engages when wheel-slip is detected, and shuts off once it's dealt with. By working all four wheels only when necessary, CR-V operates as a miserly Civic-based front-driver most of the time.

Power came from a 2.4 liter i-VTEC engine with 160 horsepower, and an automatic or manual transmission was available. The engine was praised for delivering impressive fuel mileage and reliability- though it was the only powerplant offered. If you're looking for V6 power or higher towing capacities, you'll need to shop elsewhere.

For instance, a Ford Escape will likely prove more capable in off-road conditions, and is available with a 200 horsepower V6. Similarly, the Subaru Forester is available with an exciting turbocharged boxer engine. The 2002 to 2006 CR-V wasn't the market's excitement leader- but when it came to sensible and reliable operation, it pretty much takes the cake.

If your budget allows for it, consider a 2005 or 2006 model, as a driveline update for 2005 saw CR-V's gain a drive-by-wire throttle, faster-reacting 4x4 system and a fifth gear for the transmission.
