2011 BMW 335is First Impressions

1-25-2010

The Real Difference
But the only true difference between the 335is and its “i” sibling is the engine. It’s still the same inline-six, that stays simple twin turbos: 20 extra ponies have been added thanks to an avalanche of new technologies that are supposedly more efficient and definitely more powerful.

But the only true difference between the 335is and its “i” sibling is the engine.

Among them is a high precision direct injection system located in the middle of the cylinder block that precisely measures out the mixture and that encourages the manifold use of the injector (up to 5 times per cycle). The engine also uses Double-Vanos, a sophisticated management system that eliminates the usefulness of the throttle valve. The result is unquestionably stunning, as this new engine is as powerful as a V8 but 29% more fuel efficient, in keeping with BMW’s prized Efficient Dynamics concept.

Note that the 335is is available with a six-speed manual transmission or a seven-speed automatic DCT transmission so quick that it enables you to bound from 0 to 100 even faster, in just 5.3 seconds.

A Few Laps on the Track

Once these lovely tech specs had been gone over and ado had been made about things like the standard 18-inch wheels, the high performance, naturally standard tires and a few available options, such as the navigation system, it was time to take this baby out onto the track.

Even if this certainly wasn’t my first time testing on a track, the Estoril circuit was a little intimidating, especially in the rain. But after two laps behind the pace car I had the layout down, and it was time for some serious driving.

The 335is accelerates with gusto as soon as you leave the pit lane, but you have to brake quickly for that first right corner. The car unerringly tackles it, letting you know that there’s still room for a little more throttle input. The car steers like a dream. It’s easy to balance and never balks. The precise steering and slightly stiff suspension prevent any unwelcome rolling but transmit all the heady nuances of the pavement.
