2011 Porsche Boxster Spyder Review

12-27-2010

The Spyder is very basic. There is no standard radio or air-conditioning.

Here's another example: There are no interior door handles; they have been replaced with cloth pull straps.

I never expect roadsters to have much storage space. Since the engines on all Boxsters are in the middle of the car, you do have small trunk space in both the front and back. Enough room to hold two small carry on size items.

Inside of the car, this Boxster is missing receptacles on the door panels. With the seat forward, I can put my purse behind it and there is a small cubby behind the shifter that holds a phone, keys and a small wallet.

The cabin of my car is drapped in the optional Carrera Red leather and it really adds to the’ hot’ factor of this vehicle.

Other options include bi-xenon headlights, sport shifter, automatic climate control, painted roll bar and sport exhaust. Add on the price of all these options and it brings the total of my test car to $90,425.

Bluetooth, USB interface, cup-holders and floor mats are included as standard equipment in all Boxsters.

I am very pleased that this Boxster not only looks slightly different than the S, it drives differently as well.

It is powered by a direct-injection flat-6 cylinder, 3.4 litre engine. It delivers 320 horsepower which is 10 more than the S and 65 more than the base Boxster.

I am excited beyond words that I get to drive the 6-speed manual transmission. Yes, with the PDK, the Spyder can do 0-100km in 4.8 seconds and it is incredibly smooth. This wonderful 7-speed double clutch gearbox with launch control is exhilarating to drive, but I still have a soft spot for a doing the shifting myself.

The six-speed manual transmission is standard and is amazing to drive, it really connects the driver to the road.
