The 2003 model year will bring significant upgrades to Acura's model line-up. Such upgrades will include numerous performance improvements to the successful MDX, interior and chassis refinements for the Canadian-exclusive 1.7EL and a minor facelift for the Acura luxury flagship sedan, the 3.5RL.
2003 Acura MDX
Acura's luxury sport utility vehicle, the MDX, will receive a next-generation engine, a new, compact 5-speed automatic transmission, a revised chassis and a collection of sophisticated torque and engine management systems for 2003.
The new 3.5-litre VTEC V6 engine now achieves a maximum power output of 260-horsepower and 250 lb.-ft. of torque - an increase of 20 horsepower and 5 lb.-ft. of torque. Yet while more powerful, the 2003 MDX also emits fewer exhaust emissions than the 2002 model.
Managing the additional power is a new "drive-by-wire" throttle system to more accurately tune engine response to the driver's input. Also new is a Vehicle Stability Assist system to manage unwanted wheel spin and help reduce both vehicle oversteer and understeer. When combined with a revised Variable Torque Management 4WD system - remapped to provide up to a 30 percent increase in rear torque - the MDX is designed to deliver a confident, secure ride.
The 2003 MDX also features sport sedan-style handling due to revised settings to both the steering and suspension systems, delivering a smoother ride with enhanced steering feel and reduced kickback. Also helping to achieve improved handling is a 35 percent increase in dynamic torsional body rigidity.
Additionally, the MDX is now equipped with environment-sensing headlights and front wipers. By monitoring exterior lighting conditions, the headlights now turn on and off automatically. The front wipers, by sensing both the presence and severity of precipitation, will also turn on and off as well as adjust the speed to keep the windshield clear.
Other minor refinements include new 17-inch alloy wheels, aluminum step garnish, a lighter interior wood trim and an auto up/down driver's power window.
2003 Acura 1.7EL
Sitting in a class by itself, the uniquely Canadian compact luxury vehicle, the 1.7EL, will also benefit from significant changes for the 2003 model year.
A limited number of special "Aero" accessory packages are available with the 2003 EL in Satin Silver Metallic, Nighthawk Black Pearl or Eternal Blue Pearl exterior colours. Combining a rear spoiler and trunk tray with front, rear and side skirts, the Aero package can be added to the EL with either the Touring or Premium trim levels for $1300. This dealer-installed package represents a value of approximately $2600 based on the suggested retail prices of Honda Genuine Accessories.
All EL trims, however, receive a high tech self-illuminating instrument gauge cluster and a centre console armrest redesigned to include a storage compartment. The front seats have been redesigned to deliver a more comfortable and supportive ride and rear outboard adjustable headrests have been installed. The 1.7EL in Touring trim also receives a new seat fabric design while Premium trims add an automatic climate control system.
The 2003 EL features a finely tuned suspension and steering system to deliver enhanced ride comfort and sportier handling. As well, revised engine mounts further reduce engine vibration. Also standard on all trims is an Anti-lock Braking System that now adds Electronic Brake Distribution.
2003 Acura 3.5RL
Acura's flagship luxury sedan - the 3.5RL - features a new set of taillights, redesigned front grille and new alloy wheels for a more updated look for 2003.
Inside, the RL features two new Maple wood trim finishes to compliment the ivory or black leather interior. A driver's side grab rail eases exiting and entering of the vehicle. Interior-coloured air vents now mimic the interior colour for a clean, uniform look. The rear seats add the Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren (LATCH) child safety seat system.
Also announced today were prices of the sporty 2003 Acura RSX.
