9) Volvo C30 ($27,695 to $36,995)

This little Swedish number hasn’t gotten the recognition it deserves. Reminiscent of the 1800 ES of yore, the C30 is a 2+2 available in two very characteristic versions: 2.4i, the fuel-efficient variant that emphasizes driving enjoyment, and 2.5T, the more potent and fine-tuned version that offers big thrills.

10) MINI Cooper ($22,800 to $38,400)

This life-size go-kart is truly a hatchback. It’s a clear improvement over the Mini manufactured by Austin in the past, whose trunk wasn’t as accessible nor as flexible. The modern MINI has gotten bigger and become middle-class too. BMW proposes three versions (basic, S and JCW) that distinguish themselves by their power plants and very different behaviours on the road.
