In order for Americans to enjoy a more pleasant drive, the dimensions of the car were stretched, particularly the track's width. "Stability is improved and the driver still benefits from great handling characteristics," says the designer. Economic requirements
Hartmut Sinkwitz is somewhat reluctant to admit it, but the pressure was tremendous: the new smart has to be an economic success. Because the company lost a lot of market shares in Europe over the last few years, the permanent termination of the brand was seriously considered. Economic requirements have become unavoidable. "Smart chose to focus only on a single product by directing all its development efforts and resources to the Fortwo Coupe and Convertible. I'm convinced that the subtle changes we've made will give the car a whole new life, while still appealing to our loyal customers. We were given a lot of freedom during the development process, but we wanted to preserve the ingredients that make up the smart's personality. And I think we succeeded," concludes Mr. Sinkwitz.
