2014 Indian Chief Classic First Impressions

11-4-2013

by Pascal Bastien , moto123.com

Indian Motorcycles expands across Canada with its first authorized dealer in Quebec, Motos Illimitées, in Terrebonne. Moto123.com had the opportunity to test ride the new 2014 Chief Classic, the first product launched since Indian was purchased by Polaris (which also owns Victory motorcycles).

Indian can be proud of its offering, with high levels of quality, sublime looks, and a unique character all part of the package.

When you take a first glance at the 2014 Indian Chief Classic, you can't help but admire the big, 1,871 cc pushrod V-twin with heavy chrome cladding, magnificent cooling fins, and no disgraceful radiator or hoses.

Superb styling, modern technology
The 2014 Indian Chief Classic stays true to the brand's design heritage, starting with a three-dimensional War Bonnet logo on the large, wraparound front fender. The Vintage Indian Red paint, tires with white sidewalls, and massive Thunder Stroke 111 engine all catch your attention, too.

Despite its retro styling, the 2014 Indian Chief Classic uses a number of modern technologies such as electronic ignition and fuel injection, keyless start (with engine immobilizer), cruise control, an aluminum frame and swingarm, a telescopic fork, belt final drive, and 300mm front discs with 4-piston callipers and ABS. There's no guesswork, here: Everything is designed to offer the friendly riding dynamics of modern motorcycles with the appeal of classic machines.

Sound and charismatic
Access is easy thanks to an ultra-low seat and centre of gravity, and the riding position on the 2014 Indian Chief Classic feels relaxed, with my arms and legs just slightly stretched. There is also plenty of room on board. Keep in mind, though, that this bike weighs no less than 370 kg.

The abundance of torque at low revs, combined with the nicely calibrated 6-speed transmission, is another definite ally during low-speed manoeuvres with the 2014 Indian Chief Classic. The engine's flexibility and liveliness are quite pleasant, while the amount of power from 4,000 to 5,000 rpm is surprising for a cruiser. I also appreciated the sound effects, which are just loud enough to excite the ears without disturbing the entire neighbourhood.

On the road, the 2014 Indian Chief Classic behaves soundly and predictably. The long wheelbase and rigid frame inspire confidence in corners, while the competent suspension provides good stability and more comfort than you'd expect from a low-profile motorcycle. Ground clearance is decent for a cruiser, so you can actually have fun on twisty roads. What's more, braking proves safe and convincing -- a significant improvement from the old model.
