2014 BMW R nineT Preview

2-9-2014

by Pascal Bastien , moto123.com

The superb new 2014 BMW R nineT roadster successfully combines classic and modern design elements. It's a fantastic way to remind fans all over the world that BMW has now been manufacturing motorcycles for 90 years.

The 2014 BMW R nineT will likely become a hit in BMW Motorrad showrooms based on the many accolades it received since launching at the Paris Motorcycle Show last fall. It's already one of the brand's most iconic models, echoing the sleek and clean architecture of 1923 BMWs.

Last hurrah for BMW's air/oil-cooled boxer engine

Powering the 2014 BMW R nineT is the famous 1,170cc flat-twin engine, which makes its final go-around before the next-generation, liquid-cooled boxer fully steps in (already found on the 2013 R1200GS). It produces 110 hp at 7,750 rpm, giving the 222kg roadster (all tanks full) a power-to-weight ratio that promises some exciting times on the road. The shorter shaft final drive will further improve acceleration and passing. In fact, at the Paris launch, BMW announced 0-100km/h sprints in 3.8 seconds and a top speed of around 200 km/h.

Future 2014 BMW R nineT buyers will have a lot of fun starting at the dealership with a host of customization options and accessories including:
  • Custom rider’s seat with gold ''R nineT'' logo;
  • Aluminium tail cover or comfort passenger seat, also with gold ''R nineT'' logo;
  • Ergonomically shaped rubber pads for the knees on the right and left side of the tank;
  • Tank bag and rear bag;
  • HP carbon engine cover;
  • HP carbon mudguard;
  • Anti-theft alarm;
  • Heated grips;
  • Titanium Akrapovic sport silencer with Low (short connector tube) and High (long connector tube) positions.
Sporty chassis
The 2014 BMW R nineT is built on a new tubular frame with the engine/gearbox doubling as a load-bearing unit. The seat is just 785 mm high and narrow enough for riders to easily put both feet on the ground at idle. The instrument panel is borrowed from the R1200R, and includes a large analog speedometer and tachometer with a multifunction digital display in the middle.

BMW did not use the Telelever suspension for styling and handling purposes. The R nineT therefore sits lower up front thanks to a 46mm upside-down fork that contributes to superior weight distribution and greater agility. It's the same setup as the S1000RR superbike, for goodness sake! The rear Paralever suspension with single shock absorber, meanwhile, is derived from the R1200R.

In the braking department, the 2014 BMW R nineT gets dual 320mm discs with 4-piston callipers up front, and a single 285mm disc in the rear -- all backed by advanced ABS. The spoke wheels add to the R nineT's retro looks, but they're not compatible with tubeless tires.

Final word on 2014 BMW R nineT

Bikes with neo-retro styling often fail to deliver true modern performance. The new 2014 BMW R nineT is bound to please on both fronts, while providing a wide array of customization options that will likely be followed by even more aftermarket accessories. Don't miss your chance to see it up close at the Montreal Motorcycle Show beginning February 28th.
