2011 Volkswagen GTI Review

1-13-2011

by Mathieu St-Pierre , Auto123.com

Next comes the Hyundai Genesis Coupe. As you read these lines, the Gen Coupe remains the best-looking 2-door coupe under $40k. Beyond this, the car falls a little short on many aspects, namely its 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. Although it puts out 210 hp, 10 more than the GTI's same-size mill, under load and by comparison, the realistic output feels more like 160 hp. The 6-speed manual gearbox is fine, but lacks the GTI's refinement.

The fare comparison here would be with the 2.0T GT. At $31,149, the car does include Brembo brakes, steaming-hot 19” wheels and a rear limited-slip differential. Incidentally, the GTI has electronic transverse differential lock (XDS) on its front differential; similar but not as effective as a mechanical lock.

On a track, the Gen Coupe does not flow the way the GTI does. The VW can link back to back esses with little effort while the Hyundai will require more input from the driver and more dexterity and this, not because of RWD-derived potential fun.

The Gen's potential is huge, however its 1,550 kg thwarts power, already “down”, and performance. The GTI's svelte-by-comparison 1,389 kg and real 200 hp combine for more lively romps. So whether on the road or track, the GTI fares better.

Next and last comes the Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback Ralliart. Now this car tugs at my heartstrings: 2.0 turbo, AWD, 5 doors and all for $31,998. In pure acceleration, fun-to-driveness especially at this time of the year, the Lancer takes the crown. It's faster, more focused and edgier than the GTI. In a straight line and around a corner, the Ralliart will happily tail the GTI and once the steering wheel begins to straighten up, it will fly by.

Problem is that this car lacks all forms of refinement, much like the EVO as featured in our comparison test. The Lancer overall is fairly basic transportation, effective, but basic. As with the EVO, the Ralliart gets seats, an engine (237 hp 2.0T) and a transmission (the fabulous TC-SST). The remainder can and is found in all other Lancers.

The GTI oozes class, fit and finish and high-end materials. (Photo: Matthieu Lambert/Auto123.com)
