2011 Volkswagen GTI 5-door Review

Performance enthusiasts—even those fundamentally opposed to anything absent a clutch pedal—will marvel at the DSG’s lightening quick operation and exceptional “shift precision,” which slots the perfect cog at the perfect moment. Years of suspension refinement pay off
Volkswagen’s Golf GTI has always been a most capable entrant in the sports car field. While not a low-slung road machine, the GTI—especially the latest iteration—is an exceptionally athletic machine that delivers outstanding handling capability while imparting unfiltered feedback to its driver that includes a true sense of road feel and stability.

I enjoyed the immediacy of the GTI’s reactions. Steering inputs were instantly executed without feeling impulsive or unnerving. “Control and composure” best define the response. Somehow, the GTI seems to adapt to one’s mood, becoming highly charged when appropriate while otherwise remaining suitably docile and relaxed.

The GTI’s ability to convey civility is partially undermined by a fairly firm ride quality. It’s by no means harsh but bumpy surfaces tend to find their way into the cabin, which over time can be a little wearisome. Keep in mind though, my comment reflects a middle-aged or greater perspective—and that’s not necessarily the GTI’s target market, although it may be that of the Panamera.

So is the GTI the poor person’s Panamera?
Obviously rhetorical but worthy of consideration nonetheless. Both rides are German engineered vehicles that combine performance with a dose of practicality in the way of four doors and cargo space behind the rear seat. The GTI’s DSG autobox is remarkably similar to the Panamera’s PDK setup and there’s even a turbocharged version of the Panamera available, although it’s the pinnacle of the lineup.
