2010 Subaru Legacy First Impressions

7-23-2009

Second observation: despite considerable improvements with the powertrains, the larger size of the Legacy takes a bit of sportiness out of the handling performance, even in GT trim. You become more aware of the car's width and length, especially in the tightest corners.

That said, I tip my hat off to Subaru for developing one of the best, if not the best, continuously-variable transmissions on the market. In automatic mode, it quietly adapts to your driving style and revs up the engine without turning it into an excessive screamer. In manual mode, it responds to fingertip inputs with solid execution. On a negative note, however, the automatic transmission is not as responsive.

Overall, accelerations are pretty decent, the cabin is serene and the GT spices things up with a much livelier power delivery.

I guess I could say that the new 2010 Subaru Legacy is my automotive equivalent: it ages fairly well and develops new skills over time, albeit at the expense of a slim physique. The future will soon tell us if the new design helps the Legacy enjoy all the success it deserves.
