Additionally, the split-opening tailgate enables easy loading while doubling as a convenient exterior seat.

The interior feels and looks well assembled and masterfully trimmed-- albeit for a bit of painted sheetmetal peeking in from around the door trim. Entry and exit up front were more awkward than expected, mainly because of the wide step-in created by the optional running boards. It's rare to see an SUV driver smiling after a fill up, but if you drive a diesel-powered X5, you just might. I achieved mileage as low as 7.85L / 100km during sustained highway driving at 111 km/h on a flat road with minimal wind.

Despite the largely ideal conditions, that figure still proves exceptional-- especially given the neck-straining torque that's constantly at the ready. Combined city and highway driving averaged about 9.5L / 100km, with maximum consumption peaking around 10.5L / 100km.

Ultimately, when drivers make even a little effort to drive gently, this engine really rewards them. That's got to feel good after investing in a new fuel-saving technology.
