Taking full advantage of its ATV expertise, Arctic Cat is producing more and more side-by-side utility machines -- as are other manufacturers in this increasingly popular segment in North America.

Arctic Cat is producing more and more side-by-side utility machines.

The company positions the Prowler lineup as a safe, car-like and fun-to-drive vehicle. This way, executives believe they can attract a growing number of off-road enthusiasts.

Surprising obstacle-clearing capacity
Barely larger than a full-size utility ATV, the 2009 Arctic Cat Prowler XT 700 H1 EFI easily handles the tightest and steepest trails. Its 695-cc single-cylinder generates a good dose of low- and mid-range torque for pleasant riding at low speeds and through natural obstacles (mud, rocks, steep climbs) -- a pure delight! Docile at medium revs and calm at higher revs, this mill never pretends to have sporty aspirations yet it offers a very user-friendly operation.

Equipped with a CVT featuring Hi/Lo range and Reverse, electric 2WD/4WD and front differential lock, the Prowler XT 700 H1 EFI boasts impressive obstacle-clearing capacity. In 2WD configuration, it reaches 85 km/h and shows its playful character by allowing easy control when drifting the machine sideways. No doubt this happy behavior is derived from the Prowler that won the 2007 US Cross Country Championship.

Strong, but...
The firm suspension of this Arctic Cat allows generous cargo capacity and limits body roll despite the high center of gravity. However, even with minimum preload on bumpy surfaces, the suspension will make your back suffer, especially when riding solo with no luggage.
