2008 Can-Am DS450 EFI Preview

6-19-2007

by moto123.com

BRP introduces an all-new sport ATV designed to compete with the segment's best. And not the least: Can-Am engineers created the lightest, most nimble and best performing ATV in the entire history of the company.

The all-aluminum ALTEC chassis with dual-pyramidal frame offers maximum stiffness and durability -- without a single weld. It's also 13-percent (5.3 lb) lighter than the closest competitor. Every part is assembled using a rigorous, highly advanced process: rather than being welded, they are fit into place by aluminum-cast riveted bolts.

Performance-oriented ergonomics

The DS450 EFI has been specially developed to offer maximum space and flexibility to sporty racers. Indeed, the narrow seat with transition surface, the wide footpegs and the deep heel guards are designed for easy vehicle control. In addition, the detachable headlights and interchangeable fenders are ideally suited to racers.

The DS450 EFI rides on ITP Holeshot SR tires that improve traction and riding dynamics over all kinds of terrain. The wheels are lightweight and durable thanks to an aluminum construction with rolled edges.

The Wilwood brakes are comprised of 182-mm wave-type discs with inverted twin-piston callipers in front and a 198-mm wave-type disc in rear. They are located inside the wheels by virtue of a unique axle and wishbone design. The petal shape of the front and rear discs allows heat to dissipate more rapidly and effectively.

As for the suspensions, the DS450 EFI is equipped with an R-Type double A-arm, forged aluminum setup, which reduces the unsprung weight to an incredibly low level. The unsprung weight of the front components is only 3.5 lbs. As a result of this ultra-light design, the front axle section of the DS450 is 6-percent lighter than the closest rival. The front suspension also relies on Kayaba HPG shocks with adjustment for compression, rebound and spring preload. The travel is 9.5 inches. And at 46 inches wide, the DS450 is the widest sport ATV on the market.
