''Don't forget- winter tires are best for winter!'' - Transport Canada

by Auto123.com

Transport Canada has an ambitious goal- they want Canada to have the safest roads in the world. Through their Road-Safety Vision 2010, they hope for a 30 percent reduction in the number of people seriously injured or killed using our roadways each year. It's no small feat.

The latest part of their plan involves a video used to remind motorists that in winter driving, there is no substitute for winter tires. A demonstration video showcases the benefits of using four winter tires of the same type and size with a visual representation of stopping distances and cornering performance between vehicles with all season tires, winter tires, or some combination thereof.

"Viewers will clearly see the differences in performance, and the commentary reinforces the importance of winter tires during the colder season," said the Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities. "I urge all Canadians to look for the mountain snowflake symbol when purchasing winter tires. The symbol indicates that the manufacturer attests the tires are designed specifically for use in winter conditions."

The video was a joint effort between Transport Canada and the Automobile Protection Association. Each segment of the video features all wheel drive, front wheel drive and rear wheel drive vehicles, so drivers will more easily be able to relate to how using snow tires all around will benefit them. Regardless of safety features or drivetrain configuration, snow tires are the only way to increase a vehicle's grip on the road's surface in slippery conditions.
