Gary Paffett (C Class Mercedes) took pole position today in Adria, ahead of his teammate, Canadian driver Bruno Spengler.
Even if he missed the pole position for only one tenth of a second, Spengler was quite satisfied after his performance in qualifying.
The young Canadian driver from Montebello was already quicker on Saturday morning, in the second free practice session. After the disaster in Hockenheim, Spengler was happy to pass Q1, Q2 and Q3 in qualifying, to reach the superpole in Q4.
Finally, it was Gary Paffett who clinched pole position, only one tenth of a second ahead of Spengler. Matthias Ekström (Audi A4) was third quickest, ahead of the 2008-spec C Class' Mercedes driven by Jamie Green.
In the meantime, Spengler’s championship rival Paul Di Resta, who took the championship lead in Hockenheim two weeks ago, could do no better than 6th.
Spengler, who stands three points behind the Scot in provisional classification, could take the championship lead back after tomorrow’s race.
"I am very happy about my position on the grid," Spengler explained. "Moreover, I will start from the inside of row 1, which is good.
"I made a small mistake in Q4, but I don’t think it cost me a lot of time. It’s very difficult to have a perfect lap on this circuit, with all the sand that the cars put on the track: it is quite slippery.
"Di Resta will start 6th, which it is quite interesting for me, but anything can happen in the race. Anyway, I will focus on my own race, and I will give 100% to take maximum points. Then, we will see.”
