No matter, the Sportback concept's exterior design looks as if it represents a production model dressed up in top-level trim, so it might be a very close

representation of what we can expect of the next-generation EVO. A five-door EVO? Why not? Subaru makes a WRX sport wagon and Mitsu has just launched a Lancer Evolution Wagon in Japan, by combining both current-generation models, no doubt pointing followers of the iconic sport compact in the direction it wants to take the next-generation of hyper-tuned people haulers. Yes, sports fans, this one's destined for Canada.
Of course, I'm just speculating, something I enjoy doing. But the brand has to fill its North American showrooms with five new or redesigned models by the end of 2007, according to Mitsubishi President Osamu Masuko. The Eclipse had already arrived at dealerships previous to this announcement, and is already showing up on the street, so Masuko wasn't referring to the new sports model, but rather the Raider, which has been given a thorough shakedown by the media, me being one of those who tested it out during its Portland, Oregon

introduction (review to follow), and will arrive in Canadian showrooms in the new year, and the Eclipse Spyder is set to debut this fall. There are a variety of core models that have been given subtle facelifts, such as the Endeavor, EVO IX, and entry-level Lancer. But that last car needs to be replaced soon, and don't look for Mitsubishi to be bashful when doing so. After all, considering Mitsubishi is co-developing it with Chrysler Group and it will go up against the Caliber when launched, it had better be daring or it may be completely overshadowed by the Dodge variant - Chrysler Group's products have recently overshadowed many that have been unfortunate enough to debut simultaneously.
Of course, if the Sportback is indeed the next-generation Lancer EVO, Mitsubishi has nothing to worry about. The Caliber, as unique and well executed as it is, would look decidedly common sitting side-by-side.
