2015 Triumph Tiger 800 XR: New

by Pascal Bastien ,

The 2015 Triumph Tiger 800 XR steps into the modern era with ride-by-wire throttle, traction control, and switchable ABS, which poses a greater threat to BMW's F models.

Originally launched in 2011, the Tiger 800 XR quickly found a niche among crossover bikes -- an ever-changing segment which today includes a number of versatile and capable machines like the Kawasaki Versys, Ducati Multistrada, BMW F700GS, MV Agusta Stradale 800 ABS, and Yamaha FJ-09.

Among the improvements for 2015, the Triumph Tiger 800 XR gets redesigned fuel tank sides and radiator cowls to deflect hot engine air away from the rider. The tubular trellis frame is unchanged beyond its new titanium powder coat, while the engine takes on a matte black finish.

Terrific triple gets even better
The heart of the new 2015 Triumph Tiger 800 XR is an 800cc triple-cylinder that cranks out 95 hp and benefits from a series of modifications aimed at reducing mechanical noise and fuel consumption. Expect to achieve 4.3L/100km, which represents a 17% saving from last year. That means you could theoretically cover 430km with a single tank of gas (19L). The transmission, meanwhile, has been updated with the selector mechanism derived directly from the Daytona for quicker, smoother shifts.

Primarily designed for the street, the 2015 Triumph Tiger 800 XR features a 19” front wheel, a 43mm inverted fork, and a Showa rear shock (the all-terrain Tiger 800 XC uses telescopic WP components instead). The height-adjustable seat and handlebar remain, but there's a new quick-adjust headlight angle lever, auxiliary power socket, and sump guard. Ergonomics and comfort are enhanced thanks to new footrests that provide increased legroom, and revised geometry that mostly eliminates the stress on the rider's wrists.

Tiger 800 XRx
If you want more from your 2015 Triumph Tiger 800 XR, consider the upscale XRx model featuring:
  • Cruise control;
  • Advanced trip computer;
  • Comfort rider and passenger seats;
  • Adjustable windshield;
  • Auto-cancelling turn signals;
  • Centre stand;
  • Hand guards;
  • Advanced riding modes with selectable throttle maps to tackle all types of conditions.
On paper, the 2015 Triumph Tiger 800 XR seems to address all the issues that plagued the outgoing model while adding a host of amenities and a comprehensive rider assist package -- a jack of all trades for today's adventure-minded motorcycle enthusiasts.
