Nearly 650cc of brute power
The Burgman 650 helped spark the maxi-scooter segment when it debuted in 2002. Of course, it all begins with the liquid-cooled, 638cc, DOHC, 8-valve, twin-cylinder engine that puts an abundance of power at your disposal – more specifically 54 hp and 45 lb-ft of torque. Meanwhile, the CVT’s design includes clutch plates that cause 35% less drag for smoother power delivery.
Interestingly, there are two fully automatic modes (Drive and Power) and a manual mode to choose from. Drive mode heightens efficiency at normal road speeds and gives smooth, linear, almost shock-free power delivery for easy riding. Power mode supplies more punch when you twist the throttle. Finally, Manual mode lets you thumb-toggle between five preset gear ratios for a unique feeling of control.
Despite its sinister looks, the 2015 Suzuki Burgman 650 Executive ABS also has a green side. Refined transmission settings and reduced mechanical losses contribute to a boost in fuel economy; the engine uses 15% less gas than that of the previous model in drive mode. The Eco Drive Indicator light on the instrument panel comes on when the scooter is operated in a fuel-efficient manner. Elsewhere, the exhaust system features a triangular section muffler and is engineered to meet the most stringent emissions standards.
Safety first
The dual front brakes have an updated design with floating discs for more consistent braking performance, while a brake lock lever gives the rider extra peace of mind. The lever has a stylish new design that makes it easier to reach and operate. ABS is just icing on the cake.
Essentially a motorcycle with a step-through design, the 2015 Suzuki Burgman 650 Executive ABS perfectly nails comfort, too, with 110mm front and 100mm rear travel helping keep the ride plush. Seat height is reasonable at 760mm, and both occupants have a backrest to lean against (the rider’s is even adjustable) and a thickly padded, heated seat cushion to keep their butt relaxed and warm (heated grips for the rider, as well). The windscreen is shaped to provide great wind protection and a clear view of the road. It’s electrically adjustable to suit the rider’s height. In tight parking spaces, the rearview mirrors can fold electrically at the touch of a button.
As for cargo, Suzuki claims the 50L underseat compartment can hold two full-face helmets and has a light for nighttime convenience. Three compartments below the handlebars provide space for maps and other items you might need on the road. One contains a DC outlet that’s ideal for charging a mobile phone. A 47L rear top case is optionally available if you need even more room.
