Crossovers, hybrids, dual-purpose... Whatever you want to call them, snowmobiles designed for both on- and off-trail expeditions win over many enthusiasts with their versatility and potential.
As one of five members of the Renegade series, the
2014 Ski-Doo Renegade Adrenaline offers a choice of 4 competent Rotax engines. Draped in black with yellow accents, expect this wintery hornet to dart its way through the beaten paths and beyond.
Torque-y and stable, this Renegade will surprise
In 1200 trim, the 2014 Ski-Doo Renegade Adrenaline uses a liquid-cooled, 1,170cc, 4-stroke, triple-cylinder 4-TEC engine that produces 130 horsepower, which is on par with the Genesis-driven
Yamaha SR Viper XTX and
FX Nytro XTX, but not as powerful as the various Arctic Cat rivals. Weighing 241 kg (532 lb) doesn't really help, although it's backed by solid torque across the powerband, and drinks just 12.8L/100km of regular gas.
The 137” RipSaw track of the 2014 Ski-Doo Renegade Adrenaline 1200 is long -- it could have been longer -- but there's a difference: The track's width is 16” (not 15” like all competitors), which boosts stability without sacrificing trail handling, BRP claims. It also features standard 1.25” lugs for a nice compromise between grip and drag-free acceleration. If you want to venture deeper into the woods, then consider the Backcountry edition with 1.75'' lugs.
The 2014 Ski-Doo Renegade Adrenaline 1200 rides on a dual A-arm front suspension and rMotion rear suspension that's said to achieve new standards in comfort, capability, and adjustability. Thanks to premium HPG Plus shocks, expect a supple ride in small bumps with added performance in large ones. Are 16” of rear travel enough for you? Let's hope so, because you won't get more than that anywhere else in the segment.
Meanwhile, the lightweight and strong REV-XR platform improves handling, while its advanced ergonomics allow for more riding positions (interestingly, every other Adrenaline model now adopts the more modern REV-XS chassis).
Other 2014 Ski-Doo Renegade Adrenaline 1200 highlights
The console houses an analog speedometer and tachometer, plus a digital information screen. There's a heated, 1-litre glove box on top of it, not to mention a 5-litre storage compartment under the seat. Speaking of which, the REV-XP X seat has a low profile that gives you plenty of room to move around. Hand and thumb warmers come standard, while mirrors and a hitch are optional.
The 2014 Ski-Doo Renegade Adrenaline starts at just $11,999. Add $750 for the 4-TEC 1200 engine, and you'll still make a good deal when compared with other crossover sleds.
