Moto Guzzi launches one of the most iconic models in recent years: the California 1400. A true descendent of V7 motorcycles, this newcomer completely reinvents itself and pulls off a striking mix of American and Italian styling.
More advanced than its predecessors, the
2013 Moto Guzzi California 1400 sports a massive headlight with LED side projectors, a tall ''Patrol'' windscreen, and a digital display within the analog tachometer.
The wide 20L tank with white graphics is sculpted in a way that accommodates the big V-twin underneath. Add a classic two-tone seat, lots of chrome, and a fat fender over the 200-mm rear tire, and you get a fantastic-looking machine. What's more, dual saddlebags (total capacity of 35 L) come standard.
Proprietary configuration
The Quattrovalvole engine of the 2013 Moto Guzzi California 1400 got a bump in displacement to 1,400 cc thanks to a longer piston stroke. The result is extra low- and mid-range torque, with a peak of 88.5 lb-ft at just 2,750 rpm. And that's for a bike that weighs 322 kg. It's like a conventional 1,900-kg pickup truck producing 520 lb-ft of torque.
The V-twin is mated to a six-speed transmission designed to make the most of that impressive torque while lowering revs and reducing fuel consumption in sixth gear. The drive shaft has been revised to handle the extra output. According to Moto Guzzi engineers, this powerplant also runs more smoothly and quietly than the rest of the lineup courtesy of new viscoelastic mounts.

Equipped like a sport bike
The 2013 Moto Guzzi California 1400 offers traction control, three engine modes (Touring, Sport, and Rain), and Brembo brakes with ABS. There are four-piston calipers and dual 320-mm discs up front, the kind of stuff you normally only see on top sport bikes. An anti-theft device and cruise control are part of the standard equipment, too.
The California 1400 is built on a heavy-duty, tubular steel frame that's been extensively analyzed to achieve optimum balance and rigidity. Engineers claim that it will make Moto Guzzi proud with one of the most technically sound chassis in its class.
The 2013 Moto Guzzi California 1400 also knows how to please both the rider and passenger on long trips with platform-style footrests, dual throttle levers (controlled by the toes or the heel), a spacious, two-tier seat, a passenger hand rail, and a comfort-tuned suspension.
Once again, Moto Guzzi stands out from the competition, and the 2013 California 1400 will certainly attract touring cruiser enthusiasts with a highly desirable blend of styling, character, modern electronics and equipment. This bike lives up to the brand's reputation in pure cruiser tradition.
