Before developing its first-ever full-size ATV chassis, Kymco spent a long time studying the competition. As it turns out, the design of the 2008 MXU 500 looks to be inspired from the Honda Rincon 680. The lines are sleek, modern and almost SUV-like. Build quality is not on par with segment leaders yet, but Kymco is showing a real commitment to higher-quality fit and finish. It becomes increasingly difficult to criticize the Taiwanese manufacturer with regard to overall styling, plastic finish and ergonomics. [more]

Headquarted in Taiwan, a small island in East Asia that's officially administered as a province of the Republic of China, KYMCO stands for Kwang Yang Motor Co. Ltd. At the Montreal Motorcycle Show, we had the opportunity to meet with Jim Yang, Global Marketing Director at Kymco. We asked him to explain us what his company was all about. Here's what we have learned from our discussion. Kymco was founded in 1963. Scooters represent about 70 percent of the total production, while ATVs and motorcycles account for 20 and 10 percent, respectively. The first Kymco-branded scooters were introduced in 1992. Today, the company builds ATVs for both Yamaha and Arctic Cat as well as motorcycle engines for BMW. In fact, Kymco engineers created BMW's latest motorcycle engine. [more]

The Kymco People S 125 falls into what I like to call the "other" type of scooter. In Canada, we're used to small-wheel machines, but in Europe and Asia, a different breed of scooters, inspired from engine-powered bicycles, recalls the famous mopeds of yesteryear. [more]

It's never easy to set up a comparative test matching up various ATVs. The most important part is the planning. As is often the case, preparation is the key to success. We have to call the manufacturers and request models that target about the same customers. Then, we must gather our staff and equipment, in addition to finding the perfect location to fully assess the performance of the machines. [more]
