KTM on Saturday wrote another chapter in its history when the sports motorcycle market leaders celebrated taking its tenth consecutive Dakar Rally title. After switching from a relaxed touring cruiser to the 2010 KTM 990 SMT (Supermotard Touring), it didn't take long for the front wheel to leave the ground. In fact, I was still in first gear and not even out of the parking lot, with the little Satan guy over my right shoulder whispering how much he loved and admired me. A supermoto rider has to show incredible balance and talent in order to excel. Most of the time, supermoto races are held on a slick asphalt (or concrete) surface interrupted by sandy sections. The bikes are constantly skidding -- in a controlled manner -- which is more than enough to excite the crowd. In Quebec, this phenomenon is fairly new but quickly growing in popularity. A couple of renowned manufacturers now sell supermoto-type machines that are ready for racing. The racetracks for supermoto events are the proving grounds most often used by KTM engineers and factory riders. The company created the SMR lineup based on the data collected during these tests.
