The Harley-Davidson® Seventy-Two motorcycle is a metal flake dream machine, a Sportster® motorcycle on a trip back to the days when the cool kids rode Sting-Ray bikes and the big boys parked choppers in a row on the curb. Those motorcycles were long and lean; candy-apple colour and gleaming chrome shimmering in hazy summer sunlight. From its Hard Candy Big Red Flake paint and ape bars to its narrow whitewall tires, the Seventy-Two model is a respectful nod to that era, and to the influence of the custom culture that still percolates today along Whittier Boulevard, the legendary cruising street in East Los Angeles, also known as Route 72. A new generation of custom builder is tapping into that era and making a fresh statement, not just in California but in garages across the country, even around the world. [more]

CVOs may be pricey ($41,919 for the CVO Road Glide Ultra, compared to $22,119 for the more popular Road Glide Custom and $26,119 for the Road Glide Ultra), but are in fact a great deal for the added value and the improvements you are buying. For nearly as long as motorcycles have existed, so too have people who wished to modify them in order to suit their own personal tastes. Whether for comfort or style (rarely both it seems), riders would set to work swapping pipes, paint jobs, seats, handlebars and forks to set up their bike the way they wanted. Somewhere down the line a business savvy entrepreneur noticed the amount of money being funnelled into the aftermarket industry and couldn't see why a major manufacturer couldn't get in on some of that action. The V-Rod, with liquid cooling, a different sound from a modern engine, fat rear tire and a somewhat squat look, does not share the iconic sound and looks of the more traditional air cooled Harleys. I have always liked the basic V-Rod, and got an opportunity to spend a long day riding it at Bike Week 2010. Interestingly enough, the V-Rod struck out from the sea of air cooled models, eliciting compliments from most non-Harley riders. [more]

Daytona, Florida. With post-war Harley looks and Sportster heritage dating back to the 1950s, the Forty-Eight is quite a stunner, don't you think? Based on the Sportster 1200, this bike stands out with a small orange tank, a retro-style solo seat, a truncated rear fender with no taillight as well as some massive tires. In my humble opinion, all these elements make the Forty-Eight one of the sharpest-looking Harleys out there. [more]

The 2010 Harley-Davidson CVO Street Glide is the second most expensive model in this year's Motor Corporation catalogue. Customer Vehicle Operations (CVO) is Harley-Davidson's showcase, where the in-house stylists let loose and decorate key models to produce exclusive, hi-cost machines. The bikes usually sell out every year; so the money is good, the customers are happy, and independent builders are frustrated by the great looks and integrity of the CVOs. Life is indeed good on this front. [more]

November 11, 2009
This is it, the latest ultimate expression of the Touring family - unless of course you go for the even more expensive and exclusive CVO models. The model name has changed, but the bike is still an Electra Glide under the skin, dressed up in attractive, three-tone paint jobs, new-look wheels, and extra lighting and chrome, and a 103cid engine, up from the 96cid unit in the standard Electra Glide models. We rode the bleu-mauve-black combo, while the red-black model may be more of a visual hit. [more]

In the constant churn of new and upgraded models, wheels, paint jobs, equipment and badging that produces the bikes that Harley buyers want year after year, The Motor Company re launches the Dyna Wide Glide model for 2010 after a one year absence, with evolutionary changes to the bike in terms of looks and external equipment. But make no mistake; the on-road behaviour of the 2010 is vastly improved over the older models, thanks to significant improvements to its suspension. [more]

After a reunion with my good friend California Don the day before, I started off at 9:30 am instead of the planned 6 am. The journey would take me from Louisville, KY, to Staunton, VA -- 760 kilometers on the same Interstate! The late departure combined with a little fatigue and a major accident on the highway made for an arrival time of 7 pm. After a much needed night's sleep, I pointed the Silver Beauty towards the Ohio River. From its source in the Appalachian Mountains, the Ohio flows towards the Mississippi, through one of the most important industrial areas of the US. In fact, the major cargo on the Ohio is coal on the way from West Virginia to the great urban centers and, more specifically, their coal-fired power stations.
