The Big Adventure - Day 2

6-25-2009

by Luc Brière , Moto123.com

After a much needed night’s sleep, I pointed the Silver Beauty towards the Ohio River. From its source in the Appalachian Mountains, the Ohio flows towards the Mississippi, through one of the most important industrial areas of the US. In fact, the major cargo on the Ohio is coal on the way from West Virginia to the great urban centers and, more specifically, their coal-fired power stations. Mans-made waterways link the Ohio to the Great Lakes, and access to Canada and the rest of the world.

Personally, I was happy to see a secondary road on the map that ran along the river, a very twisty one as it turned out. That was the good news, constant construction projects was the bad news, forcing me to turn the heavy beast around far too often, as well as breaking my rhythm. And by the way, I did not manage to scrape the floorboards, despite trying to every chance I got, despite the traction robbing gravel strew about by trucks and construction crews.

After 700 km and ten hours in the saddle, I was finally in Louisville (KY), buying California Don and the delicious Kellie a long overdue beer.

Tomorrow, I will head back East, towards the famed Blue Ridge Parkway.
