2015 Yamaha SMAX Review

6-28-2015

by Pascal Bastien , moto123.com

The 2015 Yamaha SMAX is a new, sporty-looking scooter that is equally at ease zipping through downtown traffic as hitting the open road. Angular lines work to create a strong connection to the large, sporty TMAX. No matter which angle you admire it from, the SMAX has a certain ruffian look that is easy to like. In typical Yamaha fashion, build quality and finish is impressive: The plastics are attractive, and the fairing is solidly riveted.

Sporty suburban scooter
With styling like this, you'll be even more tempted to parade around town, which happens to be the favourite playground of the 2015 Yamaha SMAX. One twist of the throttle and the SMAX enthusiastically scoots forward as the tach needle reaches 6,000 rpm. This is a lively and dynamic machine -- a stark contrast with the generic offerings of certain manufacturers. Also, the single-cylinder engine feels less harsh than most 125cc scooters. While power is basically the same, the extra amount of torque makes all the difference.

In stop-and-go traffic, a simple flick of the wrist allows you to get out of potentially hazardous situations. You can immediately feel the power of the 2015 Yamaha SMAX both when accelerating and passing. Remember, at 155cc, this scooter can legally ride on the highway; in fact, it will happily flirt with speeds of 120 km/h. Even with a passenger in tow (130kg total payload), the SMAX confidently cruises at 100 km/h, and suffers from very little vibration.

Braking performance is just as commendable, with adequate stopping power both in solo and two-up riding. Brake lever feel is good as long as you use the front and rear brakes simultaneously.

Above-average comfort
With a smartly designed windshield, a generous fairing, a wide and nicely sculpted seat, 13” wheels, and full-size floorboards offering various feet positions, the 2015 Yamaha SMAX proves quite comfortable for a $3,999 scooter. The passenger enjoys a comfortable seat, grab rails, and folding footrests that don't bother the rider when not in use. The suspension feels sporty, but not excessively so as comfort remains slightly above average. The ride isn't too jarring on rough pavement, although more effective rear-shock rebound damping would be appreciated.

The comprehensive instrument panel on the 2015 Yamaha SMAX features an accurate fuel gauge so you can wait until the last minute to stop by the gas station. Good news: The under-seat storage compartment is big enough to fit a full-face helmet along with other items such as a laptop, rain suit or anti-theft chain. The front-mounted, folding cargo hook is perfect for grocery bags or a handbag.

Summing up the SMAX
The stylish and sporty 2015 Yamaha SMAX offers everything you need to ride around town and a bit beyond. With a competent little engine, dynamic handling, and comfort levels typically found on larger scooters, weekend trips to the country are definitely possible. The new SMAX boasts pretty decent quality overall, and should therefore appeal strongly to metropolitan riders looking for a safe, fun, and attractive mobility option without breaking the bank.
