Its most powerful member, the new-for-2014 Polaris 800 Indy SP, delivers time-tested performance in a smooth, fun-to-ride sled that's big on utility and versatility.

As the only thing that separates the 2014 Polaris 800 Indy SP from the lower-tier 600 Indy SP, the liquid-cooled 800 Cleanfire engine with semi-direct injection promises outstanding throttle response and stronger acceleration, with a power-to-weight ratio (449lb/160hp, or 2.8lb/hp) that sporty riders demand. It starts easily and reliably, then calibrates automatically as the temperature and elevation change. The 795-cc, 2-stroke, twin-cylinder engine is also remarkably efficient and combines with a large 43-litre tank to provide ample range.

The 2014 Polaris 800 Indy SP obviously relies on the revolutionary Pro-Ride platform. This chassis uses a progressive-rate rear suspension with a single Fox shock that offers both firmer compression and longer travel (13.9''/35.3 cm) than a traditional setup. Meanwhile, the race-proven independent front suspension with Fox shocks features a patented variable caster design that eliminates bump steer and improves overall handling.

Unfortunately, the HackSaw track features small 1'' lugs, which might not be enough given the increased power of the 2014 Polaris 800 Indy SP. Another knock on this sled is that the running boards have no evacuation holes to get rid of snow and ice that can accumulate on top of them.

On the plus side, the Pro-Steer skis feature a reshaped keel for reduced steering effort. The one-piece handlebar comes with heater elements that extend to the ends of the bar for greater hand comfort. The wide Pro-Ride seat also enhances comfort during long days on the snow, while its tapered front end allows easy transition between seated and standing positions.
