2014 Harley-Davidson Street Glide Review

8-24-2014

by Pascal Bastien , moto123.com

With the new Touring family's revamped chassis and more subdued vibrations, as well as the recent upgrades from Harley-Davidson's Project Rushmore, the 2014 Street Glide rides toward perfection without losing an ounce of its legendary character.

What exactly is Project Rushmore? It's a whole new way of developing motorcycles where the Milwaukee-based manufacturer conducts thousands of road tests with real riders in order to get precious feedback.

Stronger, more sophisticated engine
The improvements start with the High Output Twin Cam 103 engine, which produces 5% more torque (total of 105 lb-ft) thanks to a new camshaft and revised ECU. The transmission uses an updated clutch design with reinforced springs and revised hydraulic control, making things more interesting for your left hand.

The 1,690cc twin-cylinder engine sounds just as sweet as always, and particularly makes its presence felt at low revs as it accelerates from just 1,700 rpm without bucking. Due to its long-stroke configuration, the High Output TC 103 prefers to stay away from the higher part of the rev range, which is why Street Glide riders usually play it cool.

At around 120 km/h on the highway, the ultra-long 6th gear ratio keeps the engine revs low (2,800 rpm). Here, the lack of unpleasant vibrations allows you to stay on the road for long periods of time without feeling tired. What's more, cruise control is easy to use.

Comfortable and safer than ever
The 2014 Harley-Davidson Street Glide's fork stanchions have grown from 43mm to 49mm, while the fork clamps are now sturdier. The 10-spoke cast aluminum wheels are governed by all-new Reflex linked brakes with ABS. Various sensors monitor ride height, brake lever pressure, and speed to ensure optimum brakeforce distribution front and rear.

As a rider, you are nicely protected by the Batwing fairing, which delivers smoother air flow and reduced head buffeting (most of it thanks to the pressure-equalizing duct on the front). With your legs comfortably stretched, your arms slightly bent, and all the controls within reach, life on board the 2014 Harley-Davidson Street Glide is regal. On the flip side, the passenger must endure a tiny, slippery, and uncomfortable seat. So, if you plan to bring along your significant other most of the time, make sure you take a look at the accessory catalogue.

Equipped like a luxury car
Music lovers will get a kick out of the new Boom! Box 4.3 Radio, which comes standard along with 5.25” speakers, Bluetooth connectivity, and a USB port. It puts out 25 watts per channel at 1% distortion and features a factory-tuned, optimized equalizer that pumps out more power and can be played louder will maintaining sound clarity. All the functions of the radio, including station presets, can be operated via your left-hand controls.

The 2014 Harley-Davidson Street Glide also boasts a new instrument panel and 8% larger saddlebags. Opening and closing the glove box, fuel tank cap, and saddlebags is now easier thanks to the One-Touch system. In fact, you can access your cargo from the comfort of your seat.

Overall, the 2014 Harley-Davidson Street Glide is undeniably fun and rewarding to ride. It's also versatile enough to handle both short daily commutes and long weekend getaways. The extra performance, comfort, and convenience brought forward by Project Rushmore make this big Harley a decidedly modern and friendly bike. Its timeless appeal and character simply got fresher.
