2014 Harley-Davidson Fat Bob Review

6-1-2014

by Pascal Bastien , moto123.com

Launched in 2008, the bobber-style Harley-Davidson Fat Bob became an instant hit among fans of dark custom bikes. It now comes back with the latest advancements in styling, engines, and transmissions.

The 2014 Harley-Davidson Fat Bob features black-ringed headlights, extra matte black trim pieces instead of chrome, as well as a new slash-cut rear fender with dual round LED taillights in a blacked-out frame. There's also a couple of new colours such as the tester’s delicious Amber Whiskey.

Want more? The 2014 Fat Bob offers a more ergonomic, more comfortable rider's seat along with footrests and handlebars that contribute to a slightly less radical riding position than the average cruiser -- provided you stand 5’5” or taller. If not, well, you can always turn to the Harley-Davidson accessory catalogue.

2014 Harley-Davidson Fat Bob is friendly and agile
The ultra-low seat and centre of gravity immediately put the rider at ease, regardless of their size or experience. After just a few metres, you'll realize that the 2014 Harley-Davidson Fat Bob is surprisingly nimble for such a big motorcycle. The large front tire isn't too reluctant to change direction, while the great level of all-around stability will boost your confidence. Add decent ground clearance, and sporty riding becomes a treat.

The dual front discs with advanced ABS do an excellent job, allowing you to brake hard and late with two fingers only, which is rare in this segment. At higher speeds, the 2014 Harley-Davidson Fat Bob remains stout and impeccably steady as long as the road is slick. While Dyna models always show a bit more athleticism than others, make no mistake: This bike still prefers smooth flow to sporty fun.

Lovelier engine powers the 2014 Harley-Davidson Fat Bob
As soon as you push the start button, you'll hear and feel the characteristic sound and vibrations of Milwaukee-bred engines. Replacing the 96 cu.-in. mill, the new Twin Cam 103 is extremely flexible and almost impossible to stall, even when you don't twist the throttle upon starting. Rhythmic, fluid acceleration ensues, providing good old-fashioned thrills every second along the way.

The transmission delivers crisp gearshifts while being easier to manipulate. When passing slower vehicles, the nicely calibrated gear ratios and fat torque from the TC 103 happily combine for a sweet adrenaline rush. Likewise, when waiting at a traffic light, you'll suddenly feel the urge to do some quarter-mile runs.
