2013 Victory Boardwalk Review

5-19-2013

by Pascal Bastien , moto123.com

Magnificent in Gloss Black trim, the new 2013 Victory Boardwalk is a low-slung, retro-styled American cruiser that provides the typical thrills of a big V-twin engine along with the superior safety of modern technology.

When looking at the 2013 Victory Boardwalk and its superb fit and finish, it's hard to believe that the brand has only 15 years of motorcycling experience. Similar to the Judge, which shared its chassis and main components, the Boardwalk displays rare balance and rider-friendliness for a large cruiser.

Feels lighter than it looks
An ultra-low centre of gravity, long wheelbase, and 32-degree rake angle allow the 2013 Victory Boardwalk to handle like a middleweight despite tipping the scales at 307 kg. Easy to manoeuvre at low speeds (even at idle; actually), this machine feels like it weighs around 250 kg.

In terms of stability, the 2013 Victory Boardwalk is rock-solid -- enough so at higher speeds for light touring duties. If you want greater long-distance comfort, Victory offers a number of options including a tall windscreen, comfort grips, saddlebags, and a passenger backrest.

Smooth and potent
With long footrests, wide handlebars keeping the arms not too extended, and a large rider's seat sitting just 660 mm off the ground, the 2013 Victory Boardwalk escapes the daily grind to the beat of a mighty 1,731cc, 50-degree V-twin engine. Using an air/oil cooling system, it produces 97 hp at 5,000 rpm and 113 lb-ft of torque at 3,000 rpm.

Power delivery is linear thanks to the latest generation of Bosch's electronic fuel injection system, as well as a counter-balancing shaft that mitigates unwanted vibrations. Fear not, however: You'll get your typical share of mechanical thrills and unmistakable sound effects.

The 2013 Victory Boardwalk delivers hard, relentless acceleration in solo or two-up riding. We can't stop raving about the Freedom 106 engine, which explodes at just 3,000 rpm and makes exemplary use of its generous power at higher revs (where most competitors run out of steam and give up). Sharp, precise shifting at all times adds to the lovely feel, although the clutch lever still requires a firm hand.

In the braking department, look for a single disc at both ends. This setup might prove adequate when riding alone, but it barely feels potent enough when carrying a passenger -- especially since there's no ABS.

Safe and comfortable
As is the case with the Judge, the 2013 Victory Boardwalk remarkably hugs the road and inspires confidence in virtually all conditions. What's more, the suspension offers surprising comfort given the bike's slammed profile.

In the end, you have an ideal mix of styling, power, and mechanical thrills courtesy of advanced technology and proper settings. Laid-back cruiser enthusiasts looking for a good time will be pleased.
