2013 Kymco People GT 200i Review

11-12-2012

by Amyot Bachand , moto123.com

Kymco has played it smart once again, endowing the 2013 People GT 200i with a fuel-injected 205cc engine that supplies enough power to excel both in the city and on the highway.

Styling
The 2013 Kymco People GT 200i retains its semi-retro looks and timeless appeal. Three paint options are available including white, black, and a flashy but oh-so sexy gold (as tested).

Storage
This scooter comes standard with a body-coloured rear top case, which is a great thing because under-seat storage is very limited: I managed to fit a camera bag and that's about it. A 12V outlet allows you to charge a cell phone, GPS or any other electronic device.

The aforementioned top case is large enough to hold a full-face helmet or a couple of bags. On the front panel facing the rider, Kymco incorporated a lockable bin to keep valuables secure. The fuel door is located under the seat.

Parking
The 2013 Kymco People GT 200i proves easy to park using the side stand. The centre stand won't give you any problems if you grab the passenger hand rails to help you out.

Having said that, I found the GT 200i rather difficult to move during my photo session; by comparison, the slightly heavier Kymco Downtown 300i gave me an easier time.

Riding position
I particularly liked the riding position offered by the 2013 Kymco People GT 200i, starting with the generous step-through design and spacious floorboard.

The comfortable seat is sculpted in a way that allows both dynamic and laid-back riding. Plus, it's not too high, so you can easily put your two feet flat on the ground at idle.

The instrument panel is fairly comprehensive and rider-friendly, while the controls are all readily accessible save for the turn signals. As for the mirrors, they deserve praise for their excellent visibility and convenient adjustment.

Performance
The new liquid-cooled, 205cc single-cylinder engine gets electronic ignition and injection systems for flawless starts. However, at idle, there's a bit too much vibration, even with a warm engine. To its credit, the 2013 Kymco People GT 200i takes off and accelerates without hesitation.

Equally at ease on service roads and expressways, the GT 200i can reach a top speed of 117 km/h and effortlessly cruises in the 105-110 km/h range. Turbulence has little effect on this machine, and riders enjoy good protection against the elements.

Riding in downtown Toronto was a real picnic, too. Moreover, the two disc brakes ensure safe, linear stops.

Bottom line
The 2013 Kymco People GT 200i finally has the power to match its aspirations. At $4,995, it represents a viable solution for those who want to have fun exploring the city and beyond, even with a passenger on board.

Pros
Proper power
Competent both in the city and on the highway
Good riding position

Cons
Vibrations at idle
Heavy to move
